Google has announced a ‘major update’ to the way its core search algorithm works. The changes are likely to affect rankings of one in ten queries made on the search engine.
What this means is that some websites are likely to see a decrease or an ‘improvement’ of up to 10% in their search traffic.
Why is this Google update important?
Well ten percent is a lot especially if your business depends on Google for most of its traffic. Getting a drop of up to ten percent can lead to a huge loss in revenue!
According to Pandu Nayak, Google’s VP of Research, ‘this is the single biggest,’ most positive change they have had in years! That says a lot to a Search Engine Optimization expert.
Whats changing on Google?
Google is implementing what it terms, Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers or BERT for short. According to Inc, BERT is a tool that helps optimize natural language processing (NPL) by using AI and massive data sets to deliver better contextual results.
What that means is that Google is focusing ‘around improving language understanding, particularly for more natural language/conversational queries.‘
In the past Google used to focus on words that it thought to be important and didn’t took much into the contextual meaning of the search phrase. For example a search on “how to catch a cow fishing?” would bring results related to livestock and cows.
However in New England, the word “cow” in the context of fishing means a large striped bass.
In another example from Google, is a search like “can you get medicine for someone pharmacy?”
The old algorithm would pick out the words ‘medicine’ and ‘pharmacy’ and serve you results of nearby drugstores.
Now the new algorithm powered with BERT would notice the words ‘for someone’ and realize you are trying to see if you are allowed to pick up someone’s prescription.
What should I do to optimize my content?
1. Think like your readers
This has always been a point when it comes to SEO, but its now important more than ever.
You need to write your headings in a way addressing a query from a user rather than a bot.
In the past Google has been turning down the need to obsess over keywords when writing your posts. Remember the days you had to write your keywords about five times in the first paragraph? Well its time to move on.
Create your content in the way that is human friendly, instead of trying to game the search engines.
2. Measure your conversion rate
If your conversion rate, for example you were trying to get people to sign up to train in places with mountains, is in the doldrums, its probably likely you were benefiting from the previous algorithm that ignored words like ‘no’ and direct traffic for negatives to your site.
Over the next 30 days traffic might dip on your site, but conversion is supposed to improve otherwise its a sign you need to take a look at your content.
Make sure your content is still relevant, makes use of the right pronouns and is answering a direct query.
3. Don’t cut off pronouns
In the past it was okay to ignore words like ‘no’, ‘to’, ‘with’ in the heading of an article because Google didn’t think much of them.
Things have changed with the BERT update which gives precedence to contextual meaning. That means trying to reduce your headline by cutting these pronouns might also reduce the number of relevant traffic to your site.
An opportunity to advertise your products or services to over 99000 followers on Twitter, is what Zimbabwean popular radio personality Samantha ‘Misred’ Musa was offering to many young entrepreneurs in the country.
The initiative titled RedMarketSunday allowed anyone with a business a chance to increase visibility of their works for free. Basically what one had to do was post any product or services they offer on Twitter with the tag #RedMarketSunday and get a free retweet to over 99000 of Misred’s followers.
According to stats released by Misred on Twitter in two weeks, that’s two Sundays, the Hashtag had garnered over 8 million impressions (number of times the tweet was shown) and a reach of over 2 million. Mighty impressive!

I am going to show you five ways you can use to survive in this hard economy.
Disclaimer: First before we dive into anything, I just thought it fair to let your know, these ways are not any make money quick schemes and they definitely involve a lot of work in the beginning but once you are set up, you are going to thank me (that is assuming you did it the right way [wink emoji])!
Before I started my online journey, I had some wild dreams. Hearing the promises of the internet from a lot of people, being taken away by those quick online money guides (who hasn’t?) I wondered why everyone is not doing this? Like seriously, if you can make $2,000 in one night online, why would you do anything else? Little did I know of the journey that awaited me. I learned the hard way, trust me. Making money online in Zimbabwe or any African country is possible, but its not easy. No its not! You have to be willing to go the extra mile. Devote your time and look forward to no check for some time. I had to go a long waaay before I even got my first payout from online gigs, but I have learned there are ways we can use to speed up your first check. Lets get into it if you don’t mind…
1. The AdSense Way
This is the most common online way of making money for most Zimbabweans.
What is Adsense
Adsense in short is a platform from Google that helps you serve ads on your website. The plan is to simply make a website, about anything. Just find a niche you can focus on, most people advise on starting a website about things you are familiar and interested in maybe knitting or a blog about restaurants if you love food.
This is a great strategy, however its limiting to some of us. I have done a few blogs in the past and the ones that kicked of were not necessarily my interests. They were niches I had seen a way to exploit because there wasn’t enough big competition. You can always do research online of the strategy you use (thank Google, we can all be expects now).
Once you have chosen a niche/topic to focus on, the next thing is to create a website. You can hire services like WH.co.zw, or if you would like to do it on your own. If you choose to do it on your own, you will need a domain (i.e youraddress.com) you can buy this online for US$10-15 depending on the company you choose to buy from. Once you have your domain, its time to buy hosting, which is explained here. You can buy these two (domain + hosting) from the same company. Then you will need a blog.
Once you have a website running, that is with a few posts, its time to apply for Google Adsense. Applying is easy (follow this link), however Google doesn’t usually approve websites less than six months or with few or poor content! After you are approved it time to set up Google ads to run on your site. If you are not approved don’t fret, we have four more ways, lets move on…
2. Affiliate Marketing
This is the trickiest of them all. Yet its the most paying if you do it right.
Affiliate marketing is more like physical marketing, where you go to teenagers selling services of a game company, because they are the most likely age to be interested. If you sell insurance to them you are just wasting your time!
I hear your question. How do I do it online?
Its much simpler now that you have a website, much much simpler if its on WordPress. All you have to do is sign up to companies that sell products that will likely be of interest to your audience. 3. Sell Goods and Services

However, selling goods and services is different. You need goods or services to sell. Sometimes you need an office or warehouse. If you are going to be big, you may need authorization from different players. But don’t fret, you can start small and deal with what comes later.
Assuming you already have the goods to sell, Zimbabwe has been blessed with popular classified websites. Websites that are dedicated to selling goods and services from people like you for free. Sites like classified.co.zw and ownai.co.zw are a starting place for anyone who is serious. All you need to do is sign up, upload pictures of your products, add price and boom you are good to go.
Its that easy, but sadly if you are not selling second hand goods or goods at killer prices, you may find it daunting. You need to do more. Sometimes you may choose to do it on your own. The favorable route for most brands that want to maintain a relationship with their customers is through creating their own store online.

4. Join Freelance Communities
Freelance communities, are websites that offer an opportunity for people in different trades to make money.
Assuming you have an always connected network, there are no limits. The most popular community is freelancer.com and fiverr.com. If you have any skill at all, if you can write an article, make a website, design graphics (there are a lot of sites dedicated to graphics, fiverr.com is one), even as big as making an application, you are set to start making money.
Now the only big problem with these communities is being a newbie sucks! They are based on ratings and to get ratings you need to have done some gigs. Imagine starting out with zero ratings, competing for a gig with someone who has a 4.5 rating from 350 people? Not so good.
There are ways to get past this, like sponsoring your bid, getting a few friends to hire and rate you. Its not much but its a start.Your start there is definitely not going to be lovely, but if you are patient enough your luck will strike.
5. Leverage Social Media / Influencer Marketing
This one may be classified under Affiliate marketing, but there is a big difference to the marketing I have mentioned earlier. I have decided to let it have its own point because instead of signing up for affiliate marketing and getting a type of code in the form of URL (website address) or discount code like we do. Brands approach you this time.Well its not always the case, but once I explain it you get what I am saying.
Basically everyone you know and their uncles are on social networks these days. They may not be on Facebook, but they are definitely on WhatsApp, okay maybe Twitter? With this in mind a lot of brands are trying to reach their audience in any way possible using the various social networks available. I take it in Zimbabwe the most popular one is Facebook, so I will be basing most of my examples on it.
A lot of people are making a living out of making use of their popularity on Facebook to attract brands that they will showcase to their fans. Yes even in Zimbabwe, examples include comedy skit makers like Bustop, the new lady on the scene Madam Boss, Comic Pastor. You don’t need to be viral to leverage social media. But you have to be interesting to get attention from followers and brands.
Twitter is for the most talkative, keep your fingers on that keyboard and fire as many 140 characters as you can. Instagram is for your perfect pictures, post as many as you can and follow as many people as you can.
The beautiful thing about Instagram is that it has one of the highest follow back rate you can ever get. Tag and DM accounts share the same content as your profile, if your pictures are great they may share for free or for a price. So basically this strategy is for the ones who are dedicated and it pays off well.
Some people resort to buying fake followers for cheap, however I urge against this because you are literally buying non existing followers as these accounts are not active. Brands may notice, they want to advertise where the conversation is and where they can notice a possibility of Return on Investment.
Facebook is becoming a little blurred on what you can focus on, but live videos seem to be doing well even in Zimbabwe! (Please note, I am generally summarizing in order to keep this post at readable length for a full prognosis on the strategies to get more followers click here.)When you have a large following usually over 5 thousand, you can start promoting other accounts and get deals from brands. You may need to advertise your services on your account and other places to let potential brands know.

What is SEO
SEO is short for Search Engine Optimization, that is the art of making your site appear on top of the organic Search Engine Results page. Note that I put organic there, its going to come in handy later, but first I have to explain something…
Whenever you search on Google, you will see different website links showing up, this page is what we call the Search Engine Results Page (SERP) and usually on this page, the first 3 – 4 results of your search are adverts labeled with the Ad symbol. These ads are paid for by other individuals or organizations who wish to appear on top of the SERP, this is what is called paid search results. There is no other way to appear here other than placing a bid with Google Ads, check out this article for more!
Do I pay to do SEO?
What SEO guarantees you is organic reach. Which means its free, you don’t have to pay Google to be on top of these results, although you may need to pay experts to do it for you or buy plugins like Yoast. If you do your SEO well, you are most likely heading for the top of the organic SEO, its not usually number one but its free and if you are in a competitive industry and manage to land on top of organic SERP, well you are saving a tone of mula, but its not magic to get there.
Search engines like Google use robots to view your blog, that is, it sees the website different that humans do. It scans the code that your site is written on and extract the results to show searchers. Your site is a bunch of code like HTML, CSS etc, that browsers decode to know what to show users.
Wikipedia describes metadata as data (information), that gives information about other data. On your website your metadata is your Page Title (Title Tag), Meta Description and your Keywords.
You need to pay attention to these because this is how
Google determine what your site is about.
A good Title Tag includes a small description of the type of business; don’t do the mistake most website owners do of having a homepage titled ‘Home’, that’s a rookie mistake in web terms. You homepage should include the name of your company and what it does eg ‘Vinny Cements – Buy Quality Lasting Cement Oline, Delivered Countrywide’ is a better option for a title tag. You could also include your location in your title tag to make sure your website is shown to the right location. This sure makes it easy for Google to know what your business is all about.
Description – A good Meta Description is one that includes all the important keywords for a business. Meta Description is the part you see on the SERP just after the title of the page. So Vinny Cements, which is an online seller for local cement brands would like to make sure that their description includes words such as buy cement online, delivering countrywide, free shipment, cheap, affordable cement etc.
Keywords – websites contain what is called Meta tag something that looks like meta name=“Keywords” content=”your keywords”, this is where you are supposed to list all the keywords that will be associated with your site. This used to be of great importance, but since Google constantly improves the way it searches the internet a better way to rank for these keywords is explained below.
Google is becoming intelligent when it comes to searching
websites, where people used to fool it by just listing a bunch of keywords and
hope to rank higher for it, the competition has just upped with over a billion
websites out there, just throwing in keywords isn’t enough anymore.
These days if you really want to rank higher on Google, you
need to constantly produce useful content. This is part of the body economics
of your website. You need to make sure the body part of your website actually
adds value to users.
This is why websites with blogs updated regularly are most
likely to rank higher on Google.
If you are just starting out your blog, you need to start by
investing in niche topics. These are topics that have little to no competition
but are most likely going to add value to your customers. For example Vinny

using their cement, that will most likely show up when users search for things
like ‘how to close a sink hole’.
I don’t know how to say this so that it sinks in, if you really want to matter on Google or any other search engine you need social proof or link proof. That is, important websites in your industry having links to your site is so important.
Google determines the usefulness of content on your site by
how much other important sites refer to it. So make sure you have links that
point to your website on other important sites.
How to get backlinks
Never buy links on sites that promise to increase your rank on SERP, these are most likely scams, remember the reason I kept saying you need links on important sites is because Google can smell a scam when it is. Buying links means your backlinks are coming from black hat sites that probably have a thousand other links and no content. Which is bad?
To get backlinks you need to identify sites that matter in your industry, usually blogs, ask them for a guest post, where you write content relevant to their site and ask them to post it, some will do it for free while others will ask for a fee, its all good as long as you determine they matter.
