Why Small Businesses Should Start Investing in Digital Marketing

Do you ever feel like maybe your business is too small to engage in digital marketing or even hiring an agency for that matter?

I want to help you understand why you are probably mistaken. Every business, especially small businesses should have some form of digital marketing in their mix.

What is Digital Marketing?

Digital marketing by definition is the marketing of products or services using digital technologies, mainly on the Internet, but also including mobile phones, display advertising, and any other digital medium. (Wikipedia)

Now, why do you need to incorporate digital marketing into your business?

According to a 2017 KPMG Online Consumer report, ‘many traditional consumer businesses and new start-ups alike are moving away from models that are shop centric or geographically-focused, to ones that are customer-centric and virtually borderless.’

What this trend shows is that businesses in this century are realizing the benefits of being customer focused rather than the old way of being product focused.

Digital marketing was born out of the need to focus on the consumer, which means trying to meet the customer where she or he is. Most consumers these days spend most of their time browsing online, watching YouTube instead of catching up on TV sitcoms, this is where the customer is.

According to a study by eMarketer a US marketing survey company, advertisers will spend over $129 billion on digital advertising in 2019 — more than the $109 billion they plan to spend on “traditional” advertising. Showing how much businesses continue to value digital marketing as a means to acquire and retain customers.

You might be thinking digital marketing is only for large brands that have the pocket and know how to embark on such, but boy, are you wrong.

One could argue that small businesses are the ones who stand to benefit more from this kind of marketing. In the old days budgeting for an ad that would be placed on prime time TV wasn’t a joke, placing those billboards up in the busy sections of the streets was a only just a dream for some small businesses.

These high costs for marketing are no longer a case in the days of digital marketing, with a small budget or even no budget at all, small businesses have launched campaigns that went viral and netted them a huge customer base, all they did was be a little creative and used the right tool at the right time.

That’s the new age, ladies and gents.

Small businesses also have a better advantage of defining their customer by niching out, making it easier to target your audience with digital marketing which works better when it’s highly targeted.

Unlike TV ads which broadcasted to both grannies and young adults, in the age of digital marketing, brands can choose to just target a specific demographic that meets their defined consumer persona, which some larger corporations might have difficulties defining because of how tangled their products usually tend to be.

So are you still not convinced that digital marketing is the way to go, are you willing to be that business that bets against the future or the one that seize it to survive? Most people make digital marketing sound difficult than it needs to be, open a Facebook page today, there is your first step!
